Do Bears Really Shit in the Woods???
June 24, 2010
A truth revealed – Our dear friend Peg calls last night around 10:30, Iceman (dog) is missing. His collar broke. Iceman is blind and half deaf but ran the Iditarod a few years ago so he is a tough animal. Search woods for what seems like a mile along river on foot and four-wheeler. Find him on STEEP river bank and climb down. Iceman is freezing and scared from falling in river. Have to swim across freezing river dragging Iceman behind me and finally get Iceman up the bank. Walk too far back to road just me and Iceman. Along the way I see a huge pile of bear shit. - So there you go, Bears really do shit in the woods, and so do grown men when they see Bear shit in the woods with only a blind and half-deaf dog for protection….

Joy has increased her kennel to six Alaskan Huskies. In addition to the brothers Blue, Bolt, and Trouble, she now has three girls. They are “Girl”, Vlah, and Amie. The latter two came from Ken Anderson’s Windy Creek Kennel and Vlah is the daughter of Lance Mackey’s “Hobo”. I took these photo’s yesterday. Isobel spends hours with the dogs. She has a real heart for taking care of them.

Had to take a trip to Barrow on Saturday 1/30. The most depressing and desolate place I’ve ever been. The culture of the Inupiat people is fascinating, though. I was there to MC the new Postmaster’s Installation Ceremony. It was held at the Inupiat Hertiage Center. The village of Barrow has close to 5000 residents and is roughly 75% Inupiat. The people still live a somewhat subsistense lifestyle and hunt whales, seals, walruses, polar bears, etc. Check out http://www.nps.gov/inup/index.htm . Barrow is the northernmost city in North America.
